Note: Steps are built separately from the retaining wall.
- Lay the first course for the steps perpendicular to the main
wall. The width of the steps will be determined by the
number of units used.
- Place the step between two units on the main wall. Be
sure to fill, compact and level under all units to stabilize
the units. All units (or walls) that are next to the steps
must be vertical walls (walls with no setback). See Adjusting
Setback.
- Lay the second course of step units on the back side of the
first course.
- Be sure to fill, compact and level under all additional units
to stabilize the steps.
- The number of steps installed varies depending on your
application. To calculate the number of steps in an application
use this formula:
Number of Steps = (total height of the slope) ÷ 8"
or 6" (for Classic 8" or Classic 6" wall).
- After completing all the courses necessary, finish the steps
by adding the step treads. A variety of materials may be used
for the treads, including caps, pavers, brick or poured concrete.
Cap units are secured by applying construction adhesive to the
top of the step unit and placing the cap unit into position.
Style of cap depends upon manufacturer. (Check with your
city, county, state building codes regarding steps).
