Tiered
ROCKWOOD Retaining Walls may be installed where it is desirable,
or aesthetically pleasing, to use two or more smaller walls
in lieu of one large wall.
However, the upper walls can exert extra surcharge loads on
the lower walls. To avoid placing surcharge loads on the
lower walls, the upper walls must be set back horizontally a distance
of at least twice the height of the lower walls.
Closely spaced tiered walls can create excess surcharge loads
on the lower tiered wall sections. Such tiered walls are not
recommended.
Whenever tiered walls are constructed, a qualified soils
engineer should be consulted and approved construction plans should
be followed in constructing the tiered retaining wall.
